2011 DCC - Sunday Seminar Part 1 - WB4APR and APRS

WB4APR's brain is both fertile and fevered. This version of his talk on APRS comes from the 2011 ARRL/TAPR DCC Sunday Seminar. He spends the first five minutes or so vamping on one of his other passions - electric vehicles - while we solve an interference problem with the wireless mics.

Decoding APRS with the OpenTracker USB

I plugged in the OpenTracker, hooked it up to my VX-2R, and fired up Minicom on my workstation. I left another radio on in the background, monitoring the APRS frequency. You can hear most of the packets as they're decoded. Some weren't close enough to break the squelch on the other radio. You can also witness a few collisions where two packets overlap. These weren't able to be decoded.

Using aprs.fi with D-Star Icom ID-1

Sometimes people ask me how to use aprs.fi with D-Star. This might not be exactly what they were asking for, but here is a video displaying the new beta version of aprs.fi running over D-Star on 1298.125 MHz (128 Kbit/s DD mode, Icom ID-1). Works like a charm! Quite naturally I am using IP addresses from the amateur radio AMPRnet range (44.xyz) for the radio link. The web site is loaded over the 1.2 GHz radio link, both ends use Icom ID-1 radios which act as an Ethernet bridge. The laptop is directly connected to the ID-1 using the shown Ethernet plug (and wifi is disabled, of course). This video was shot at the OH2K club station in Kauniainen (www.krk.fi), sound track courtesy of OH2GEK working HF a few feet to the right.

2011 DCC - 'INTRO' to APRS (sort of)

I'll be honest with you - this isn't the 'Introduction to APRS' you've been looking for... the one where Bob Bruninga WB4APR, the mode's inventor, explains in step-by-step detail just how to get started and use APRS. Such a guide doesn't exist that I know of, and the ones out there that come close are quickly out of date. What this is... is another version of Bob's APRS talk, with bits and pieces of what APRS is, how it started, and where it's going (or where it can go if Bob can talk you into doing more than watching little car icons drive around on a map). You will learn a lot... just not what you were hoping to get (sorry!). This is one of three talks Bob gave (all variations on the same theme) at the 2011 ARRL/TAPR DCC in Baltimore. At the end of this video is an informal discussion between Bob and John Gorkos AB0OO about John's development of the AVRS, the Automatic Voice Relay System, another new development in APRS. John details AVRS is the 2011 DCC Sunday Seminar Part 3. I apologize in advance for the video quality. It's not terrible, but it's going to be hard to read some of the text on the screens. I was using ARVN's 'old' camera, a standard-definition camera set for wide-screen, recording in the one-hour, lower quality mode. All my high-def cameras (all three of them) were tied up in the main DCC presentation room.
