Like DR’s World Castles and Fortresses Weekend, DA-RC’s 2012 COTA Challenge will see COTA enthusiasts from all parts of the world taking to the grounds of castles and fortresses with radio communications equipment, except this time within a much more generous time frame to complete their activities.
In addition to providing unique dx opportunities for serious dx hunters, the 2012 COTA Challenge aims to:a) promote the COTA concept on 11m by providing incentives for both COTA Dxpeditioners and Hunters alike b) provide historical education through radio comms and associated promotions about the important role castles and fortresses have played in military conflicts through time c) demonstrate the broad range of projects created by the Dx Adventure Radio Club (DA-RC) and its members.
For the purposes of this DA-RC event, a ‘fortress’ or ‘fort’ is defined as “an existing or past strong hold, military building housing weapons, ammo, and providing protection.
Larger forts class as fortresses; smaller ones bore the name of fortalices.
The term ‘fortress’ is derived from the Latin fortis (“strong”) and facere (“to make”).
‘Castles’ are fortifications which are regarded as being distinct from the generic fort or fortress in that it describes a residence of a monarch or noble and commands a specific defensive territory.
