Computer set up:
Decide if you are going to use a USB or Serial connection to access the 590. I used a USB cable and so will describe that set up. To Use the 590 USB Port,you will first have to download the Kenwood 590 Virtual Comport Driver, which is located on the Kenwood web Site. Located here;
You will need to buy a USB Printer type cable , to interface the 590 to the USB port on the computer. Type A termination on one end and type B termination on the other end.
Follow the Kenwood directions to complete the Driver installation.
Setting up the 590 for USB Data Communications:

Download Ham Radio Deluxe latest version here:
You can choose either the normal version
March 29th 2011 v5.0 Build 2893
or the Beta version (means it may have issues).
When you first run HRD Ver 5 , a Setup screen will pop up, and you will select .
Kenwood, TS590 DTS and RTS Take a look at the Com port Tab and see what HRD com port is available. Pick that Com Port (Mine was COM3) select 115200 Baud speed.
If you never have used HRD , I would suggest that you get familiar with the HRD5 , before you get involved with the Integrated Digital Master 780 program, that will provide you many Digital Modes.
When you get comfortable with HRD ver5 . You can load Digital Master and other programs from the HRD “TOOLS” Tab. Scroll down to “PROGRAMS” and click on Digital Master 780.
Note you can start Digital Master 780 with HRD , by , going back to the setup and checking the box in the lower right , to start at the same time as HRD.
Here are a few notes to set up Digital Master.PSK31
When the DM screen comes up, the screen should show, a Waterfall , and should show PSK31. If not on the top tabs click on :” TOOLS” Tab, than select MODE, check the PSK31 tab. If the Waterfall is not being displayed , on the Tab top left menu clcik on “VIEW”, Select WATEFALL.
Right above the Waterfall and to the LEFT you will see Band Tabs, these tabs will take you to the correct PSK Band and frequency, Click on 14.070, the 590 should show the same display. ON the 590 Choose USB and also press the 590 DATA Mode.
Using your Mouse, move the Cursor down to the Waterfall and you should see a Yellow marker on the top of the waterfall, slide the marker to cover a PSK Waterfall signal, the text from that signal should be streaming in the Message window above the waterfall.
At this point you might want to check the audio levels from the 590 to the Computer.
Click on the VIEW tab on the top left of DM . Click on “Soundcard” Click on the RX button , my signal level show a 6/7 above the bar. You can adjust the audio level with the 590 “MENU” . #65 WHILE WATCHING THE soudcard level, and than select the 590 M.in ^ up button to increase the level. , or the SCAN v button to decrease the level.
At this time it would be a good idea to just scan the PSK signals and get familiar with the DM780 Receive functions.
Now for transmitting :
Look carefully on the PSK31 bar and opposite the Squelch bar, you will see a small button, that has a finger pointing to a page., when you bring the mouse cursor over the button , the tab shows “OPTIONS”. Click on that button. You will now see the Program Options screen pop up. Click on Callsign and fill out the info. Select CLOCK and choose the time you want displayed. Select PTT , and choose Ham Radio Deluxe , and right below the button click on configure HRD connection. A new screen will pop up, check the box Automatically connect. On the Left side of the screen, yhou will see 12 buttons, select the top left button, a new screen will pop up, Select TX Data., thans CLICK the “Save” BUTTON ON THE BOTTOM LEFT OF THE POP UP window.
You will be back to the “Program Options” Window.
Now select “Sound Card”
In the Input (Receive) click on the down arrow and choose the USB Microphone audio CODEC.
IN the output (transmit) “Speaker (USB Audio Codec)
My Output (transmit) 15DB was checked. (yours may be different)
Click on Macros, a new window will pop up, click on “Set TITLE”, another window will pop up, type in your Macro. Like CQ CQ etc. Than click “OK”.
Close the Program option window.
Now to test the Transmit function.
On the left side in the middle, of the DM780 window , you will see 3 tabs , Macros, tags and Add Log.
Select Macro, and click on the new pop up window, 1 CQ.
The Macro you typed will now appear in the lower window of the DM screen.
Now set the 590 Power to about 25 Watts or less. Set the 590 Mode to USB and than press Data button.
Click on the “AUTO” or press the F2 on the keyboard,. Look at the 590 Power output display , to make sure that the 590 is transmitting.
Check the ALC level if it is too high , go to 590 Menu # 64, and adjust the level up/down, so that the ALC is just moving one bar on the digital meter.
While I was writing this info, I was also going over all the procedures as I went along, I called a CQ and immediately was called by HA0ML, so hopefully this procedure will help to set up the 590 for PSK31.

to control the 590 . It is very useful to write and store memories , and to quickly change the Receiver Audio, and transmit audio characteristics.

Now to Receive CW Signals using DM780.
Once you have HRD and DM780 up and running ,simply click on the PSK31 tab, which is right under the Logbook tab. Than click on CW.
Set the 590 to CW Mode. . vox and Full break in, set the bandwidth to your choice I started with 700 Hz.
I would suggest that you listen to W1AW CODE PRACTICE CW , HERE:
W1AW Code practice will allow you to get familiar with receiving and decoding CW using DM780.
The CW copy at times will not be as perfect as you would like due to Static Crashes, QSB , the sending stations spacing of dots and dashes. But If you can copy CW the text being decoded will help you to understand the message.
On the top of the text screen you will see a blue Bar Peaking to the right as the CW signals are received, you can slide the tab which will act like a squelch, and minimize stray characters in the text when there is no cw signal.
Also note that there is a DM-780 CW filter + a - Filter right below the signal blue bar, you can narrow the bandwidth of the DM780 by sliding the bar left or right from 50Hz to 1000Hz
When you change the width , you can see the results in the Waterfall. To actually receive the CW signal you must slide the waterfall cursor over the waterfall cw signal.
I was able to receive W1AW WITH A STRONG 10 OVER S9 SIGNAL, AND , WAS LISTENING ON A fast NIGHT STARTING AT 35wpm . AND THAN SLOWER SPPEDS.
I NOTICED THAT THE FASTER SPEED CW the decoding was very good with few errors. As the speed slowed up I had to increase the Squelch to minimize noise bursts. Accuracy of the text was best at the higher speeds.
My 590 was set at 700HZ CW , the DM780 was set at 550Hz, and the squelch was about 75%.
Conclusion, the DM780 CW decoding was not perfect, on my first try , perhaps some tweaking would provide a lower rate of errors, but the text is perfectly readable.
As the speed slowed down there were larger spacing between characters, not sure if that is adjustable or not.
Hopefully this info will be enough to get you going on Receiving CW with DM780.
Right off the bat I could not get the 590 in CW mode to Transmit!
Had to research, the internet for more info!
First I read about KY CMD ? For the Kenwood series, but I had no clue as to what or where to find any info for keying the 590.
So I will try to take the Mystery out of CW transmitting for the Kenwood TS-590.
1. Make sure the HRD is connected to DM780, you should see a tab on the left top side of the screen below QSO tagged TS-590.
2. Next on the Water Fall bar, look for a Musical symbol “MODES” click on the Modes .
3. Here you will find the Mysterious CW(KY-CMD) check its box. Here you can also add or delete any Modes.
4. In Ham radio Deluxe Select Tools , and Custom Layout, you should see TS-590 and the default box checked .
5. Set the desired 590 output power manually or in HRD, on the 590 select CW ,vox, and full break in, if you filled out the TAG with your call sign, click on send or the auto box., to call a cq and the 590 should transmit,
6. You can adjust the Sending CW speed by , going to HRD , AND AT THE BOTTOM OF THE HRD PAGE YOU will see the “Keyer Speed Bar“, just slide the tab to the speed you want to send .
7. Use the Pause “ll” to type text to be sent, use the Eraser to erase your text.
Pretty neat to use a computer and keyboard to send and decode CW , COOL.
I have titled the article “Preliminary”” , and will adjust the procedures as required , to make the information as easy as possible to follow. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
