Cobra 29LTD: Identifying the audio amplifier

Share

Cobra CB Radio MODEL(s): All versions of the 29LTD

DESCRIPTION: Identifying the audio amplifier

ACTION: Cobra has used three different audio amplifiers in the 29LTD:

First Generation

The original audio amplifier is the TA7222AP. The Cobra part number is 307-288-9-001. This IC has been discontinued by the manufacturer. If the radio has a TA7222AP audio amplifier, it must be replaced with another TA7222AP.

Second Generation

The TA7222AP was replaced by the YD1022. The Cobra part number is 307-057. This IC has been discontinued by the manufacturer. If the radio has a YD1022 audio amplifier, it must be replaced with another YD1022.

Third Generation

The YD1022 has been replaced by the TDA2003. The Cobra part number is 307-117-N-001. If the radio has a TDA2003 audio amplifier, it must be replaced with another TDA2003.

ADJUSTMENTS: None

NOTES: If the lettering is not readable on the IC chip, refer to the visual aids on image 2.

TA7222 vs. YD1022

Both of these devices use a 10-pin inline package (SIP) and look very similar. The easiest way to determine which one the radio needs is to check for diodes D601 and D602. If these diodes are present, then the radio uses the YD1022. If the diodes are missing then the radio uses the TA7222. The diodes are located right in front of the audio amplifier as shown below:

TDA2003

The TDA2003 is a 5-pin chip, in a TO-220 size package. If the radio has a 5-pin audio amplifier, then it uses the TDA2003.
